Christian Racing Driver Bio

My name is Steve Owens and I was born in Pensacola, FL but moved to Chesterfield, VA (hometown of Denny Hamlin, just south of Richmond) when I was close to one year old. I come from a strong Christian family who are wonderful supporters and motivators. Religious and racing roots were instilled in me from a very young age, Sundays always revolved around the three C's of Church, Chicken, and Checkers. As I moved into my teen years I became less interested in the real purpose of life, which is to glorify our God and King. I managed to avoid; sometimes narrowly, doing any permanent damage to my life, but in the time being I put a significant strain on my strong family bond. That's when I was reintroduced to Sarah. Sarah and I had gone to youth group and Sunday Schools together as teens and she had heard through the grapevine that I was struggling with my faith. Sarah was strong and unwavering, much like the rest of my family; in her aggressiveness to make me see that God had a plan for my life and I needed to release my life back to Him.

That was about 9 years ago, relationships have long been mended and now she is my beautiful wife of 5 years. Together we have a pretty bad-to-the-bone 3 year old named Jack. Jack shares my love for all things racing and quite honestly knows the drivers names and car numbers better than a lot of my friends. Jack has really enjoyed iRacing too, we set him up a mini iRacing rig so that he can go out in test sessions and run over the cones.

Over the years I've played just about every sport, I really love Ice Hockey, though a surgery on my neck a little over a year and a half ago pretty much ended my Ice Hockey playing days. It was while I was at home recovering from the surgery I was itching to find something to do during the days when I wasn't allowed to do much moving. I remembered back to my days of playing NASCAR Racing 2 and the games (Simulations) that followed in that series and decided to give iRacing a try. I was hooked again; however, after almost 8 months of playing, and stopping, and playing again, I was thinking about giving up the iRacing account. I knew that I didn't need to find better quality drivers to race with, I needed to find better quality people to race with. This is when I found Christian Racing. Now I look forward to the racing, but moreover the comradery that is formed with racing with the same group of guy's night in and out. I enjoy the positive talk, and the invocation is the first thing I tell people about when explaining what the league is like.

The Tuesday night series has been a blast, and really brought my brother and I closer together too. Jon is 4 years younger than I am and we have a standing date for almost every Tuesday night. He comes over for dinner, and then we start working on the setup for the race that evening. He is a great crew chief and strategist. One of the best nights was when we scored our first top 5 at our home track of Richmond in April. There were a few fist pumps and high fives that night. Now that he has gotten his own account; I'm hoping that one day we will be able to be on the track together in Christian Racing League.

I have been blessed to be able to be involved in the sport that I love over the Last 5 years. I work as a Crew member/ Spotter for the Robert Grimm Racing #71 in the NASCAR K&N East Series with the driver Eddie MacDonald. This has led me all over the east coast and out as far as Iowa to run races with an awesome bunch of guys that just love making a car go fast. Some highlights of my time there have been winning at Bristol Motor Speedway on a G/W/C finish, and even though I've been to a lot of the big tracks, I love visiting the small "Home tracks" around the country. Tracks like Greenville Pickens Speedway, South Boston and Bowman Gray have given me goose bumps when you think about the History that's taken place on that Pavement.

I'd like to say thank you to the leaders of Christian Racing League that have made this their mission to keep this group together as long as God allows. I know you guys make valuable sacrifices of time and money. I want you to know that it has really been a blessing for the 4 months that I have participated and I hope to stay connected for many more years. I really hope that in my travels I get to meet more of the Christian Racing group. In my life when someone has asked me why I like stupid old NASCAR so much I usually reply with these things. It's the smells; like racing fuel. The sounds; like the engines but most of all for me is Racing = Family. See you on the track.
